"I've waited years for a husband." Beth stopped in front of Tanner, her hazel eyes flashing indignantly. "To have someone who would wake up in my arms each morning, a baby to rock to sleep. Isn't that what all women dream of? So why am I so bad for wanting the same things?"
"You're not as long as you know I'm not good husband material." Tanner took a deep breath and tried not to reflect on what he could see beneath her sheer nightgown. "But you think you can soothe my hurts and make me care about you enough that I'll change my ways."
"I don't give a fig about your hurts."
Tanner didn't want to stop. "You think that beneath this rough exterior there's a man worth saving, worth turning into a husband. You're wrong."
God, how he wanted her even when she was pushing him, making him feel things he'd long forgotten. He still wanted to feel her arms around him, even while he was trying his best to push her away.
"I have a man waiting for me. Why would I want a coldhearted bastard like you?"
"Because the man waiting for you, doesn't make you feel like this," he said as he pulled her into his arms.

Sylvia McDaniel has taken the most serious of the Burnett brothers and given him a suitable story--THE OUTLAW TAKES A WIFE is a study of inner self for both Beth and Tanner. Both characters are tormented with personal histories that are outside what we consider 'proper', forcing them to both deal with their demons and find someone willing to accept them regardless.
The third installment of the Burnett Brides is Tucker's story. Adamant that he'll never wed, I'm convinced that talented writer Sylvia McDaniel will help him decide otherwise and find a bride worthy of Eugenia Burnett's approval.

Eugenia Burnett was so happy that one of her sons was happily married. But she still had two stubborn sons to work on. Tucker was now a marshal. Without consulting him, Eugenia placed an ad for a bride. She then corresponded with Elizabeth Anderson, signing the letters as Tucker. As the date neared for Beth to show up, Eugenia told Tucker. To say he was NOT happy will suffice.
Beth Anderson was on the last leg of the journey to Texas for the first meeting with her soon-to-be husband when the stage coach was robbed by The Bass Gang! Tanner was pretending to be a normal passenger, but in truth was a new member of the gang. Tanner kept the driver from shooting the leader of the gang (and managed to keep his cover) but the bullet hit Beth! Unable to let an innocent woman die because of him, he took her to a doctor and nursed her back to health.
I have to omit a lot of fascinating details to keep from giving the twists and surprises away. However, the story focuses on Tanner and Beth. Tanner had been away from his family for eleven years when he accidently reunites with them and found out Beth was meant for Tucker. Worse, Tucker was a Marshal! The Bass Gang was not happy that Tanner was delayed in meeting them or why! And Beth could easily identify them all! NOW you see how awesome this book sounds! After reading it, I can honestly say you won't be disappointed! It is even better than it sounds!
My only problem now is waiting for the last of this trilogy to come out so I can see Tucker hooked!

Review of "The Outlaw Takes A Wife"
by Sharon Galligar Chance, Reviewer for Bookbrowser.com
Sylvia McDaniel brings us another intriguing story of love in the Old West
with her second installment of The Burnett Brides series. The Outlaw Takes A
Wife is a tale filled with sensual romance, heartwrenching drama, and a
wonderful happy-ever-after ending. Everything a great romance needs!
McDaniel has also done her historical research of the period, and includes
the fascinating tale of the legendary outlaw Sam Bass within this story.
Look for the final installment of the Burnett brothers' story in The Marshall
Takes A Wife, due out in July, 2001.
Mama Burnett is at it again! The second story in the Burnett Brides trilogy is great!. Eugenia Burnett loves her sons and she is determined to find wives for them. What a wonderful reading experience! This was a great second story in Ms McDaniel's Ballad trilogy. It was very absorbing and moving as Mama Burnett accomplishes much more than finding a wife for her son, she also has her long lost son returned to her after his absence of a decade. And quite expertly the third and final story is introduced.....I am definitely anxious for it's release in the summer of 2001.

THE OUTLAW TAKES A WIFE is the second of the Burnett Brides series by Sylvia
McDaniels. In the first book, we were introduced to the family, especially
the matchmaking machinations of Eugenia, mother to the Burnett men. She's
back again, doing her best and generally making her boys' lives miserable -
with the best of intentions of course. I had some reservations about
Tanner's and Beth's reactions in some places, thinking they were overdone,
but in general, they were strong characters with deep traumas in their past
that needed to be resolved. It was fun seeing Rose and Travis again, and
Eugenia is a hoot. I also enjoyed watching the interaction between the three
brothers, since Tanner was only mentioned in the previous book, never seen.
I look forward to the last book in the series - THE MARSHAL TAKES A WIFE.
